Ziplining, Hiking & Rafting – The Tara River Canyon Has It All

Are you a fan of Zip Lining? If so, then a visit to the Durdevica Tara Bridge in the Mountains of Northern Montenegro offers the perfect adventure.

Are you a fan of Zip Lining? If so, then a visit to the Durdevica Tara Bridge in the Mountains of Northern Montenegro offers the perfect adventure. Flying over the deepest River Canyon in Europe, and the second largest in the World at 1333m deep, you can travel along a 1050 zipwire at speeds of up to 120km per hour.

Open from the 1st May to the 1st November you’ll experience a phenomenal natural landscape with the spectacular Bridge in the background and though the ride itself only takes a few minutes, the scenery is simply amazing! The Canyon itself, as part of the Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features high cliffs, more than 80 large caves, rocky terraces and of course the Tara River which cascades around 40 times as it winds its way along the valley. Part of the River Rafting Route, the Tara River is extremely popular with Kayakers, and the one-day route runs from Brstnovica to Sćepan Polje which is around 18km in length including 21 out of 50 rapids along with the steepest drop in elevation.

The Bridge, which is located between the Villages of Budečevica and Trešnjica is a sight to behold, and a feat of engineering brilliance, built between 1937 and 1940. It’s 365m long, has five arches and once held the title of the biggest vehicle concrete arch bridge in Europe. Re-built in 1946 (after a Yugoslav raiding party destroyed parts of the bridge during the war) it featured in the film ‘Force 10 from Navarone’ and also in the Dutch Novel Het land achter Gods rug by A. den Doolaard. It’s also highly interesting to note that the Bridge also held a second record, which is that the wooden scaffolding (needed to build the bridge) actually cost around 40% of the total budget.

Along with the Zipline, the Rafting & the Bridge, there’s plenty of other activities you can take part in around the area, with plenty to see and do along the way. Certain trees in the forests date all the way back to the Ice Age & the area has an extremely rich & diverse range of animals & fish including trout, graylings, vultures, eagles, bears, wolves and foxes. Otters have also been known to frequent parts of the River, and though they are rare – you might get lucky!
